The Cost of Personal Independence

No one likes to be poor and not able to pay their bills. No one wants to depend on another person to sort their bills. People like personal independence.

But like every other good thing, independence comes at a cost.

Most people may not like the cost due to an eroding value-adding system but there is no side-stepping the cost if you want to enjoy true independence.

What’s the cost? The cost is vision, diligence, discipline, sacrifice, and patience.

Did you notice the cost is not pluralised? It’s all the above elements lumped into one package.

That’s the cost of independence – financial independence, professional independence and indeed any sort of independence.

The reality is that people don’t like this cost and want to enter a short-cut.

News alert: There are no short-cuts to successful independence.
Independence is a product of continued work of combining the above elements.

And that’s why a lot of people end up getting burned, particularly in get-rich-quick scams. In this internet dispensation, where everybody is looking for half-baked fame and wealth, which more often than not fizzles out very quickly, the end result for most is more predicament.

This has led to the proliferation of internet fraudsters (popularly known as Yahoo!) and all other forms of scams like MMM and Ponzi schemes.

You have to understand that the core process of making money is adding value to others.

There are lots of graduates that are looking for jobs. Instead of starting from the bottom and taking ANY suitable job or providing services or products, they are impatient.

Some will prefer not to work for years because they are looking for their dream jobs. These are jobs they are not equipped for or that’s beyond their reach.

This is not to discountenance the fact that the environment has not prepared many for opportunities or made opportunities available but in the end, everyone is absolutely responsible for the outcome of their lives.

You need to take responsibility for your life.

How? Set a plan for yourself. Be detailed. Be diligent. Be disciplined. Organise yourself for the required sacrifices along the way. And be patient with the journey.

Life is a marathon, not a sprint.
